Academic Success and InnovationThe Vice Provost for Academic
Success and Innovation is a key leadership position in the Office
of the Provost responsible for overseeing academic and
administrative areas that support the institution's educational
mission. This role demands a strategic leader who can manage
multiple initiatives aimed at enhancing student and faculty
success, as well as fostering strong relationships within and
outside the University.Professional Qualifications and Personal
QualitiesThe successful candidate must hold a doctoral degree and
have significant experience in higher education administration,
particularly in academic affairs. In addition, candidates must have
proven their ability to lead and manage complex projects and
initiatives.Additionally, the successful candidate should have:
- A forward-looking, holistic understanding of faculty success
and student success across undergraduate and graduate programs and
an ability to enhance student learning in the classroom and outside
of the classroom.
- A willingness to innovate, encourage experimentation across
campus, and scale successful initiatives that can positively impact
the entire institution.
- Experience leveraging new technologies to enhance faculty and
student outcomes.
- An understanding of an evolving higher education environment
and engagement in national conversations on undergraduate and/or
graduate education through organizations such as the American
Association of Colleges and Universities (AAC&U), Association
for Undergraduate Education at Research Universities (UERU),
Council on Graduate Education (CGS), or Association for Public and
Land Grant Universities (APLU).
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the
ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups of
stakeholders, including faculty across all the University's
academic schools.
- The ability to coordinate academic initiatives across a large
and complex campus, allowing for flexibility in academic units
while also ensuring a cohesive approach to the University's
educational mission.Key Responsibilities of the Vice Provost
Include:
- Administrative Leadership for Academic Affairs Units: The Vice
Provost will lead academic affairs units dedicated to academic
success, including the AccessAbility Resource Center, Center for
Teaching and Learning, and Educational Technology Services. This
leadership role will require working directly with the unit leaders
to develop and implement strategic plans and evidence-based
programs to enhance student outcomes. Collaboration with various
departments and stakeholders will be paramount.
- Student Success Working Group: The Vice Provost will chair a
campus-wide working group focused on increasing student retention,
persistence, graduation rates, career learning outcomes, and
post-graduation outcomes, and on identifying and facilitating
innovative student success initiatives and high-impact practices
such as experiential learning opportunities and internships.
- Liaison to Academic Affairs Units: The Vice Provost will
convene meetings with leaders of academic affairs units to discuss
challenges, opportunities, and strategic plans, and serve as a
bridge between academic affairs units and the Office of the Provost
to ensure departmental goals align with university-wide academic
priorities.
- Student Mentoring: In collaboration with the Office of
Undergraduate Education and the Office of Graduate Education, the
Vice Provost will work to promote and support mentoring programs
that facilitate meaningful connections between students and
faculty, contributing to students' academic success and personal
growth.
- RA/TA Policy: The Vice Provost will work collaboratively with
the Office of Graduate Education on the development and
administration of policies related to research assistants (RAs) and
teaching assistants (TAs), including review of exception
requests.
- Student Travel: The Vice Provost will develop and implement
policies and procedures for student travel, ensuring that travel
opportunities contribute to the educational experience while
addressing safety and liability concerns.The Vice Provost for
Academic Success and Innovation is a newly created position, and
this individual may be asked to take on other responsibilities as
assigned by the Provost based upon the evolving needs of the
University as well as the skills, experiences, and interests of the
